Lee Johnson

Materials have been the backbone of Lee’s professional and artistic life. Yarns and fabric were a strong presence in her childhood and silver and metals through college. She went on to work in architecture and construction, specializing in materials; wood, metal, polymers, polyurethanes, isocyanurate, silicones, epoxies, EPDM, KEE, TPO, PVC, fibercement, polyethylene, to name a few.

She returned to fiber, her first wonder; discovered wet-felting and was hooked. She combined the felt with polymer clay in 3D sculptures and jewelry. More recently she has discover paper arts and has added Joomchi to her long list of material studies.

Lee’s work has been shown at Fuller Craft Museum, Lexington Arts and Crafts, and Brookline Art Center.

Lee has a studio in Allston, Massachusetts and lives in Brookline.

The image memories I have of my family are my two Grandmothers knitting, my Mother stitching, and my Father punching a rug in his lap.

Fiber was a big part of my early life. I learned to knit when I was 6, ran the sewing machine needle through my thumb at 8, and stitched by first crewel work at 13. Needles, thread, yarn, and fabric were the toys I grew up with.

After a degree in Silversmithing and 50 years in architecture/construction, I have returned to fiber. Wet felting is my primary medium; manipulation of fiber, blending of color, and its strength to form dynamic shapes integrate my favorite aspects of expression. It inspires me and moves me forward.

I work in bold colors, happy and whimsical shapes. Expressing humor and joy is important in life and is important for me.
