Rae Gold

Rae Gold has been immersed in fiber her entire life. As a child of six she learned knitting from her mother and crochet from her neighbor.

Rae received her BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, (now Carnegie-Mellon University) where her favorite subject was packaging and three-dimensional design.

After graduation she became interested in weaving, creating three dimensional woven sculptures, and for fifteen years built a body of fiber art as an independent artist.

Many of her woven sculptures depicted the human form. This interest coupled with her love of knit fabrics and dye techniques informed her move from sculpture to one of a kind wearable art. For the next 30 years, Rae Gold’s clothing was exhibited regularly in some of the top craft shows in the country, published in professional journals, and garnered a loyal following among fashionable women. Her garments were sold in boutiques across the US, and over the years Rae developed a number of exclusive lines for Timbavati in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  “In a sense, I made a living making beautiful packaging for women’s bodies”

In 2013, Rae ended her clothing business and returned to her studio practice full time. For the past ten years she has explored and developed new works in wet felting Joomchi, a form of felting layers of mulberry papers into a single sheet, and most recently, basketry.

“These mediums have been all consuming for their sculptural qualities. I have always been drawn to architecture and glass for inspiration. Their variety of form, surface, shape, and color open endless possibilities. I enjoy pushing techniques to see if they can be developed in unexpected ways. For example, my Joomchi works evolved from flat wall pieces into sculptures.”

Rae exhibits nationally and teaches felting and Joomchi. Her clothing and sculptures are in private collections across the US.
